Who would have ever thought that naming a non-profit ministry would be so hard? We know what the organization hopes to do, how it is going to work, what it may possibly become, but how do you put that into a name that communicates the purpose, is easy to remember, and is short. To be honest it is quite obvious with our name we missed the mark on at least one of these.
So my future staff and I sat down to come up with a name so that I could form the non-profit and get started on the seemingly painful process of becoming a 501(3)c non-profit. We decided to setup a time that all of us could get together before two of us went on NET Canada. In what seemed like an unnecessarily complicated manner we all dialed in our Skype accounts and linked our cell phones and 20 minutes later we were all connected and ready to name this ministry.
Everyone was in a different location, some more private than others but after a 2 hour conference call riddled with a background of fast food orders, truck noise, car horns and babies crying we had finally come up with… a mission statement. Yes, you read that correctly we worked hard to find time to get together, actually made it happen, discussed it for 2 hours and still didn’t have a name!
To be honest, it was for the best, because once we had the mission enumerated it was easy to distill out the most important few words that would eventually become our name.
